Program Overview

The CU GOLD (Gaining Opportunities through Leadership Development) Applied Leadership Program is open to admitted and enrolled CU Boulder students who have completed the introductory level of the Core Leadership Program. (We define enrolled as any student who is admitted and taking one credit hour.)

While CLP is dedicated to developing self-awareness and a basic introduction to leadership theory, the ALP is about applying this knowledge to working in a group setting for change. Therefore, participants will be held to a higher standard in terms of contributing to the learning that takes place in the weekly meetings. Specifically, the program consists of a day at the CU Challenge Ropes Course and weekly discussion-based meetings devoted to various leadership topics. Additionally, each person will be expected to help facilitate a group activity, complete a group process assessment, conduct an interview with a current leader, as well as participate in case studies and discussions. Finally, students will be asked to work together in teams to develop and present an action plan for a project that positively impacts a community based on the concepts they have learned in both programs. Students who complete all aspects of the program will be recognized at the end of the semester.

The ALP is foundationally based on the philosophies and models found in “Exploring Leadership For College Students Who Want to Make a Difference” by Komives, Lucas, and McMahon (2007) Jossey-Bass.
